Before the matches of GKS Katowice in the IIHF Continental Cup, we talked to our Club's Finnish forward, Joona Monto.
GKS Katowice is undefeated so far in the regular phase of the TAURON Hockey League. Do you feel a great satisfaction with how you're performing this season?
We are well aware that we are competing in the league against very good teams, but our team also possesses great quality. Honestly speaking, I don't think any of us expected to be able to win so many consecutive games, which makes us even happier because it's an impressive streak. There were a few games this season where we were on the brink of defeat, but we always found a way to change the course of the game.
We need to translate these victories into self-confidence and the awareness that we can achieve a lot, but at the same time, a bit of humility will be helpful. We must remain hungry for victories and good play. We can't say that we played perfectly for 60 minutes in all of our previous matches, and that's what we need to strive for, even though it's challenging.
Ahead of us is a trip to Cortina d’Ampezzo for the IIHF Continental Cup games against teams from Italy, Hungary, and Denmark. What are your expectations for these matches?
It will be a different experience compared to playing matches in the Polish league, but I feel that we are well-prepared for the international challenge awaiting us in Italy, and most importantly, we're going there with the belief that we are capable of winning. It's hard to say exactly what to expect in Cortina d’Ampezzo. We'll be facing three teams with high-quality play and class players in their lineups.
We have tough matches ahead, but I believe that our recent experience in the Champions Hockey League should pay off this year as well, when we'll be competing in the Continental Cup. This multi-day foreign trip and the opportunity to represent Poland and Katowice in European competitions will be an exciting adventure for our entire team.
You're in your third season in Poland. It seems like you really enjoy our country!
When it comes to Poland, so far I've spent the most time in Katowice, and I really like this city. I live well here, and thanks to that, I can fully focus on my professional hockey career. The first association with Katowice? Restaurants - there are many places where you can have a very good meal and meet with friends or family who visit me in Poland.
Do you think Poland is a good choice for tourists and travel enthusiasts?
Definitely yes, Poland has many cities that can be interesting for tourists from all over Europe, such as Krakow, Gdansk, or Warsaw. From what I know, a lot of my compatriots visit Poland during vacations or holidays and speak highly of this country as a safe, good place to live, full of historical attractions. Personally, I don't have many opportunities for extensive travel around Poland apart from trips for matches, but whenever I have a bit more free time, I try to explore different places.

GKS Katowice jak do tej pory jest niepokonany w fazie zasadniczej TAURON Hokej Ligi. Czujesz sporą satysfakcję z powodu tego, jak prezentujecie się w tym sezonie?
Doskonale zdajemy sobie sprawę, że mierzymy się w lidze z bardzo dobrymi zespołami, ale i nasza drużyna ma w sobie wielką jakość. Mówiąc szczerze, chyba nikt z nas nie spodziewał się, że będziemy w stanie wygrać tyle meczów z rzędu i tym bardziej nas to cieszy, bo to imponująca seria. Było w tym sezonie kilka spotkań, w których byliśmy na granicy porażki, ale zawsze znajdowaliśmy sposób na to, by zmienić scenariusz spotkania.
Musimy przełożyć te zwycięstwa na pewność siebie i świadomość, że możemy dokonać wiele, ale jednocześnie przyda się trochę pokory. Musimy być nadal głodni zwycięstw i dobrej gry. Nie możemy powiedzieć, że we wszystkich naszych wcześniejszych meczach graliśmy idealnie przez 60 minut, a do tego trzeba dążyć, choć to trudne.
Przed nami wyjazd do Cortina d’Ampezzo na rozgrywki w ramach Pucharu Kontynetalnego i mecze z zespołami z Włoch, Węgier i Danii. Jakie macie oczekiwania wobec siebie przed tymi spotkaniami?
To będzie inne doświadczenie niż rozgrywanie meczów w polskiej lidze, ale czuję, że jesteśmy dobrze przygotowani na wyzwanie międzynarodowe, jakie nas czeka we Włoszech, a najważniejsze jest to, że jedziemy tam z przeświadczeniem, że stać nas na wygrywanie. Ciężko powiedzieć, czego dokładnie się spodziewać w Cortina d’Ampezzo. Zmierzymy się z trzema zespołami o wysokiej jakości gry i z klasowymi zawodnikami w swoich składach.
Czekają nas trudne spotkania, ale myślę, że nasze niedawne doświadczenie gry w Hokejowej Lidze Mistrzów powinno zaprocentować także w tym roku, kiedy będziemy występować w Pucharze Kontynentalnym. Taki kilkudniowy zagraniczny wyjazd i możliwość reprezentowania Polski i Katowic w europejskich pucharach będzie ciekawą przygodą dla całej naszej drużyny.
Rozgrywasz swój trzeci sezon w Polsce. Wygląda na to, że bardzo podoba ci się w naszym kraju!
Jeżeli chodzi o Polskę, jak dotąd najwięcej czasu spędziłem w Katowicach i bardzo lubię to miasto, dobrze mi się tutaj żyje i mogę się dzięki temu w pełni skupić na zawodowej grze w hokeja. Pierwsze skojarzenie związane z Katowicami? Restauracje - jest tutaj wiele miejsc, gdzie można zjeść bardzo doby posiłek i spotkać się w miłej atmosferze ze znajomymi czy rodziną, która odwiedza mnie w Polsce.
Czy według ciebie Polska to dobry wybór dla turystów i miłośników podróży?
Zdecydowanie tak, Polska ma wiele miast, które mogą być ciekawe dla turystów z całej Europy, takie jak Kraków, Gdańsk czy Warszawa. Z tego, co wiem, sporo moich rodaków odwiedza Polskę podczas wakacji czy urlopów i bardzo sobie chwali ten kraj jako bezpieczne, dobre do życia miejsce pełne atrakcji historycznych. Sam nie mam okazji do częstych podróży po Polsce za wyjątkiem wyjazdów na mecze, ale kiedy tylko mam nieco więcej wolnego czasu, staram się poznawać różne miejsce.
